gopro&  sennheiser

An exciting advancement comes from Sennheiser, who are talking about developing a new action camera microphone which will allow GoPro users to finally match their breathtaking footage captured at the extremes with high-quality audio.

Sennheiser’s product, on show in the Future Zone, is a mini external microphone that the company claimed is waterproof and nearly immune against snow, ice, and wind. Based on a lavalier design, it features an internal protective device, the Umbrella Diaphragm, which is located above the acoustically active membrane. A windshield made of a special foam material ensures that the mic can even be used for water sports while fully retaining its wind protection properties.According to Sennheiser, the microphone’s windshield is being fine-tuned. It needs to protect the mic reliably against wind noise and must retain this quality even when completely immersed in water. A classic hairy windshield or a classic foam windshield could not do the job – if they get wet, quality sound has a hard time travelling through it.

We can’t wait to see the finished product!

SmallHDScreen-Shot-2016-09-08-at-10.14.09-AM-600x402

SmallHD has announced two new 13” production monitors. The first is called the 1303 HDR , which features a bright 1500 nit display (viewable in full sunlight), and provides HDR (high dynamic range) viewing capabilities. The second is the 1303 Studio, designed for use in more controlled lighting environments. The 1303 Studio features a 400-nit display and provides the same feature set, minus the high brightness and HDR capabilities of the 1303 HDR.

According to SmallHD the 1303 HDR and Studio feature an extremely wide viewing angle with little to no visible color shift. The 1303 HDR also utilizes an optically bonded glass screen with an anti-reflective coating for added protection while eliminating glare.

The 1303 HDR builds on the HDR technology that SmallHD developed for its 17”, 24” and 32” Production Monitors, but in a much smaller package. The 1303 HDR looks to be a good field monitor for small crews, who don’t require a large monitor, but need something bigger than your typical 5/7″ on camera display.

The new monitors can display a 1920×1080 image on 10bit IPS LCD panels, with a 4-up signal view. The 1303 HDR offers a high color range, capable of reproducing the P3 color gamut. Plus it provides an HDR Preview function with built-in tools for real-time monitoring and customizable camera gamma settings.

Both 1303 HDR and Studio can support any 3D LUTs using SmallHD’s ColorFlow technology. Previously created look-up tables can be used on-set, or LUTS can be loaded via the monitor’s full-size SD card slot.

The new monitors can be fed via either HDMI or SDI inputs and can output to either format as well. Cross conversion takes place in a mere single frame.

Like the rest of the SmallHD Production and Studio monitors, the 13” versions are extremely rugged—built with a solid, milled aluminum chassis. To deal with on-set realities, even the 3mm thick screen impact protector can be replaced in seconds.

For quick deployment the monitors can be used at home on a rack, table-top, arm, C-stand or cart. The feature numerous ¼-20 mounting options all around the frames, plus the RapidRail system that can provide quick mounting of various accessories like wireless receivers and focus systems.

Power is via 12VDC through a 4-pin XLR connector. An optional onboard Anton/Bauer Gold mount or V-mount battery plate with a 4-pin XLR connector can be attached. A video receiver (Teradek, Paralinx, etc) can be mounted to the RapidRail system and powered by the LEMO accessory connection on the back of the monitor or D-TAP through the battery bracket.

Both monitors will be available on SmallHD.com and through SmallHD authorized resellers in Fall 2016. For more information visit: smallhd.com.

The inaugural Media Production Show earlier this month was a huge success. We’d like to extend a huge thank-you to everyone of you that came to visit the BPS stand.

It was BPS’s first foray into exhibiting at a trade show and we were delighted to see so many content creators from the film, TV and digital industries.

With queues to get in reaching around the block on both the Thursday and Friday some 4,986 visitors attended the show across the two days. Huge thanks to all of you who came to visit and support us, it was great to see old friends and meet new.

MBI event director Charlotte Wheeler said:
“The vision of the event, to bring creativity and technology together, resonated with thousands of people and the feedback from visitors, speakers and exhibitors has been phenomenal.[gap height=”30px”]

And the winner is…

During the Media Production Show we ran a daily prize draw competition. On offer on day one was a Sonos Play:1 and the prize on day two was a GoPro HERO Session camera. 100’s of hopefuls threw their business cards into the pot but in the immortal words of Highlander,

“There can be only one” or in this case, 2!

Norah-Anne Barron of Pi Communications was Thursday’s prize draw winner. Sukh and Jono caught up with her this week in Dublin to deliver her prize, a Sonos Play:1. The mini but mighty Play:1 is a compact and surprisingly powerful, smart, wireless speaker for streaming music with deep, crystal-clear sound.[ux_image]

Friday’s prize draw was for a GoPro HERO Session. Small and light, with easy one-button control and rugged, waterproof design. HERO Session is perfect as a second GoPro camera, or for the first-time GoPro user who wants the simplest, grab-and-go capture experience. The winner of that draw is Paulo Biolcati of the Royal College of Surgeons.

If you didn’t make it to this years show we hope to see you next year in a bigger and better venue, Olympia for a bigger and better Media Production Show 2017.

Virtual Reality is currently climbing the hype cycle. Augmented Reality is almost in position to begin its own ascent. There are daily stories about hardware advancements, the amazing product expected from the latest VR start-up to be funded, or the VR development plans of a gaming house or production studio. How, as media professionals, do we separate what is real from what is vapourware?  And how do we make best use of the technology and business aspects of this emerging marketplace, which some consider to be a new media type and art form.

The phrase ‘virtual reality’ was coined by theatre practitioner, Antonin Artaud as early as 1938 and the concept of VR was popularised in mass media by movies such as, Brainstorm and The Lawnmower Man.

However, the ultimate dreams of video producers and video editors is to create an astonishing panoramic 360 video camera with the incorporation of our own virtual reality are only just being realised. Whatever immersive experience you dream of recreating Virtual Reality opens the door to new ways of communicating, and experiencing the world we live in.

YouTube made it possible to play interactive 360-degree videos on its site just over a year ago.

If viewed on a laptop, viewers can use a mouse to adjust their perspective. But if watched on a smartphone or VR headset, the experience becomes more immersive, as changes in viewpoint correspond to the movements of the device being used.

With technology like 360Heros Plug-n-Play which includes rigs and stitching software it is becoming ever-easier to create your own amazing, immersive VR experience, even underwater with the 360Abyss.

And this week at the 2016 NAB Show Adobe, Sky Italia and GoPro are among those demoing new VR tech at the event.

GoPro’s new technology, includes Custom Solutions systems, Live VR, and Omni the synchronised six-camera spherical rig. Precise, pixel-level synchronization makes stitching in post-production easier and more exact — especially when compared to unsynchronized camera arrays. Full package includes Kolor software apps, Autopano Video Pro + Autopano Giga.

You can purchase the rig only for £1,299.00 or with the cameras for £4,199.00. The Omni is available to pre-order now with shipment expected in August

YouTube introduces live-streamed 360-degree videos on its service.

The Google-owned platform said select concerts from California’s Coachella festival would be the first to use the virtual reality facility.

In addition, it announced videos on its service could now be enhanced with “spatial audio”, which simulates the effect of sounds coming from different directions and distances.

One expert said the innovation could greatly enhance VR experiences.

“From musicians to athletes to brands, creators have done some incredible things with this technology,” blogged YouTube executive, Neal Mohan

“Now they’ll be able to do even more to bring fans directly into their world, with 360-degree live-streaming.”
